Supplement claims are routine in storm damage work — and they're where a significant portion of your total claim value often lives.
What a supplement is
An insurance supplement is a request to increase the original claim payout based on new information — typically hidden damage discovered during tear-off, material price increases, or line items the adjuster missed or underpriced.
Common supplement items
- Rotted or water-damaged decking found during tear-off
- Pipe boots, skylights, or flashings that need replacement
- Code upgrade requirements (e.g., ice and water shield where not originally included)
- Material price differences between estimate date and actual installation
- Permit and inspection fees the adjuster didn't include
How it works in practice
Your contractor documents the additional damage with photos and measurements, creates a supplemental Xactimate estimate, and submits it to your insurer. The process typically takes 1–3 weeks. Your insurer reviews and either approves, partially approves, or denies the supplement.
"Whatever the insurance pays is what we'll do." This means they'll cut corners if the payout is low — at your roof's expense.
